The Government’s Policy and Innovations Unit report recommended that 20% of energy supply should come from renewable sources by 2020.

Biodiesel is a domestic, renewable fuel for use in diesel engines that is derived from natural vegetable oils and animal fats. Biodiesel contains no petroleum, but can be used in any concentration with petroleum-based diesel fuel in existing diesel engines with no major modification. Biodiesel is produced by a simple refining process called transesterification which removes glycerin from the vegetable oil or animal fat. The process leaves two products - methyl esters (the chemical used for biodiesel) and glycerin.

Used in conventional engines, pure biodiesel (B100) has been shown to reduce emissions of total unburned hydrocarbons by as much as 70%, total carbon monoxide and other particulate matter by almost 50%. Sulfur emissions are essentially eliminated altogether. The use of Biodiesel also significantly reduces health risks associated with petroleum diesel.

The EPA has surveyed the large body of biodiesel emissions studies published over the past several years and averaged the Health Effects testing results. Their findings show biodiesel emissions exhibit dramatically decreased levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (nPAH), which have been identified as potential cancer causing compounds. In the Health Effects testing PAH compounds were reduced by 75% to 85%. Targeted nPAH compounds were reduced by 90% to 99%. These reductions in the carcinogens are also realized in blends as low as B20 (a mixture of 20% biodiesel and 80% petroleum diesel.)

In May 2000, biodiesel became the only alternative fuel in the country that successfully completed the Tier I and Tier II Health Effects testing required under the Clean Air Act. These results clearly demonstrate the significant reductions in most currently regulated emissions that can be achieved by using biodiesel, as well as biodiesels non-toxic effect on health.

Ethanol

Ethanol, also known as ethyl alcohol, drinking alcohol or grain alcohol, is a flammable, colorless, slightly toxic chemical compound, and is best known as the alcohol found in alcoholic beverages. In common usage, it is often referred to simply as alcohol. Its molecular formula is variously represented as EtOH, CH3CH2OH, C2H5OH or as its empirical formula C2H6O (which it shares with dimethyl ether). After the use of fire, fermentation of sugar into ethanol is perhaps the earliest organic reaction known to humanity, and the intoxicating effects of ethanol consumption have certainly been known since ancient times. In modern times ethanol intended for industrial use has also been produced from byproducts of petroleum refining. Because of ethanol's ease of production and its low toxicity, it finds widespread use as a solvent for substances intended for human contact or consumption, including scents, flavorings, colorings, and medicines. In chemistry it is both an essential solvent and a fundamental feedstock for the synthesis of other products. Because it burns cleanly, ethanol has a long history as a fuel, including as a fuel for internal combustion engines.

A proposal to make it mandatory to blend 20 per cent ethanol with petroleum could become policy in India by March, it has been reported.

The minister of state for new and renewable energy Vilas Muttemwar told news resource the Hindu that a group of ministers will make a decision on the proposal next week.

It seeks to encourage the use of biofuel as an alternative source of energy, following the Indian government's approval of plans to blend ten per cent ethanol with petroleum from October.

He said the initial plan is for just 20 per cent to be added as that would not require any changes to be made to car engines

LONDON (ICIS news)--Biodiesel may be used as more than an environmentally friendly fuel in the future if employing the product as an alternative to heating oil takes off in Europe, an industry expert said.

Former industrial chemist Andrew Robertson stressed the potential carbon reductions which would follow if UK heating oil users swapped to a more environmentally friendly option, at a talk named 'Using Biodiesel as an alternative to Heating Oil' at the Biodiesel Expo in Nottingham on Wednesday.

Biofuels are often referred to as being carbon neutral -- that is, the carbon dioxide (CO2) that is released through burning them is roughly equal to the amount they sequester when in plant form. In that way, growing biofuel crops helps ease global warming, their proponents argue, as they act as "carbon sinks" reducing CO2 levels.

In that way, relative to petroleum, biofuels could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by "more than 100 percent", World Watch says. Switchgrass and other grasses rate the highest in this regard, with the possibility of reducing emissions by between 70 and 110 percent (relative to petroleum fuels) compared to corn and wheat only offering maximum reductions of 40 percent.

According to the U.S. Departments of Energy and Agriculture, the 1.3 billion tons of "biomass feedstock... potentially available in the U.S. for the production of biofuels" is currently enough to replace around 30 percent of the country's existing gasoline consumption.

On Sunday, a Virgin Airlines Boeing 747 took off from London's Heathrow Airport en route to Amsterdam. This short flight may prove to be a giant leap forward for the aviation industry.

The aircraft did not carry passengers - but it was the first commercial aircraft to fly partly under the power of biofuels.

One of the aircraft's four engines ran on fuel comprising a 20% biofuel mix of coconut and babassu oil and 80% of the normal Jet A aviation fuel.

Biofuels - principally ethanol and diesel made from plants - are one of the few viable options for replacing the liquid fuels derived from petroleum used in transport, the source of about one quarter of the human race's greenhouse gas emissions.
